VSO

Cambodia was our preference for a placement and as events turned out we were offered Stung Treng in Cambodia. Angela is to work as a midwife in Stung Treng referral hospital and eight health centres travelling between by motorbike. So amongst the immediate challenges are learning to ride a motorbike and learning the language, Khmer. We have to commit to studying the language and understand some placements have access to a part time translator for a higher level of language understanding.
The placement is in the Programme Area of Reproductive and Child health, the VSO Goal is Health and Social wellbeing and the VSO Volunteer role is strengthening individual capacity.

Khmer language training - Some extracts from lesson 1:

Sua s'dey   (Good morning)
ta neak mok pi pror teih na:?   (Where are you from?)
pror teih Ong glei   (England)
Khnom kampong rein pea sa khmer   (I am learning Khmer)
Laa:or nas    (That's good)
Lea sen hai    (Goodbye)

We are hoping to see Fresh water dolphins near to Stung Treng.
Stung Treng is a friendly, quiet country town situated on the confluence of the San River and the Mekong River. It actually sits on the banks of the San River, with the mighty Mekong coming into the picture on the northeastern outskirts of he town.
The San River goes by three names, some call it the Kong River because the San and Kong Rivers merge together about 10 km northeast of Stung Treng town . Others call it the Sekong River, which is the combined name of these two rivers.
